Daily Prayers for May 5

O Lord, let my soul rise up to meet you

as the day rises to meet the sun.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Come, let us sing to the Lord : let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.

Song “I Will Trust in the Lord”

Rise up, O Lord : and may your enemies be scattered.

Psalm 25:1 5

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; my God, I put my trust in you : let me not be humiliated, nor let my enemies triumph over me.

Let none who look to you be put to shame : let the treacherous be disappointed in their schemes.

Show me your ways, O Lord : and teach me your paths.

Lead me in your truth and teach me : for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long.

Remember, O Lord, your compassion and love : for they are from everlasting.

Rise up, O Lord : and may your enemies be scattered.

Numbers 10:29 – 36 Luke 4:31 – 37

Rise up, O Lord : and may your enemies be scattered.

French sociologist Jacques Ellul wrote, “One thing, however, is sure: unless Christians fulfill their prophetic role, unless they become the advocates and defenders of the truly poor, witness to their misery, then, infallibly, violence will suddenly break out. In one way or other ‘their blood cries to heaven,’ and violence will seem the only way out. It will be too late to try to calm them and create harmony.”

Prayers for Others

Our Father

God, you call us to walk alongside the poor, all the while reminding us of our own poverty in spirit. Grant us courage to cry out against injustice. Grant us burdened hearts that ache to see the enemies of hunger, violence, and economic injustice scattered.

May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you : wherever he may send you;

may he guide you through the wilderness : protect you through the storm;

may he bring you home rejoicing : at the wonders he has shown you;

may he bring you home rejoicing : once again into our doors.
